What you want to do is optimize your website for the search engines - you tell the search engines what your site is about and hope they reward you with a good ranking. So if you have a website on doohickeys, someone searching for a doohickey will see your site in the search engine results.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is your need.
Paid Web Traffic
If you are not happy with how much free web traffic your website is getting, then you need to pay for it. This is not always a bad thing, actually. If you are able to market your site and spend $10 dollars to sell $50 dollars worth of goods - that gives you $40 dollars of profit with the transaction.
Search engine marketing (SEM) is your need.
How the Two Relate (free vs. paid marketing)
The age of a website plays a factor between SEO and SEM marketing efforts. A new website typically is unknown on the internet, and paid marketing (SEM) will be used more heavily. Since getting free web traffic can take time (SEO efforts can sometimes take months to bear major fruit) it only makes sense to pursue paid marketing in the beginning.
Over time your efforts to promote your website via optimization efforts (SEO) will pay off, and you may find that you will be able to cut back on your paid traffic (SEM).
Two points we would like to make:
- Everyone should always promote their website via SEO. You don't always have to pay others to do it for you - there is plenty of free advice available to you on the internet.
- Many companies will find that even after they have obtained an effective SEO status for their website - they continue using paid marketing. The right answer all depends on whether you can make a profit doing it, of course.
